VOICE 2012 Drops A Bombshell

Oh man, James Alburger and Penny Abshire just blew all our minds when they recently announced that VOICE would be held in Disneyland in June of next year.  “I’m going to Disneyland!” remarked a million unfunny people referencing pop culture jokes from a few years back.  Regardless, I am going to Disneyland.

We have been to VOICE the past few years and I was a huge fan of their last venue1 but this is just amazing.  Huge, huge kudos to them for pulling this off.  The amount of work that must go into securing a deal like this must be phenomenal.

There are a few more voiceover events to choose from the past few years (ours included), and you should certainly go to them all if you can, but this is the grandaddy of them all.  Days of classes, amazing events, an incredible variety of things to learn and do and apparently, um, rides!2  All of this for a reasonable price as well considering what is offered.

Wanna go?  Of course you do, you’re no idiot.  Clickety click on the banner up top there and get all the rich creamy details.3

1. There was a huge bar.  Right in the middle of the lobby.  It was beautiful.
2. Plus me.  Don’t miss out on your chance to meet me!
3. Sorry, I was looking at that Kudos bar picture.

Erik Sheppard Works In Voiceover, Has Tattoos…

…Both at the same time.  Next I’m going to try the walking while chewing gum thing.

You may be aware that I have a thing for voiceover related tattoos so I thought I would share footage of my last one that was filmed for television.  At least you’ll have the satisfaction of watching me bleed.

Man, even when I’m hanging out with cute little tattoo girls I’m still talking about Lindsay.

Come Join My New Voiceover Groups

For years I used to coach voiceover.  A lot.  Sometimes 5 or 6 hours in a day.  A few months ago I had to take a break as my duties running the agency coupled with my time on the mic just made it impossible and the 16 hour days were killing me.  Funny thing though – I miss it.

Go figure.

Anyhoo, I decided to jump back into the game in a way that was feasible for me and offered something new and unique to students that isn’t already available from one of my esteemed colleagues.

People often say to me, “Erik, you are so brilliant and attractive, I wish I could find someone like you who would be at my beck and call to personally guide me and help me as I go through this journey in voiceover.”  Good idea, says me.

Briefly, my new program offers:

  • Two groups – Beginner and Advanced
  • A strict cap of 10 students per group
  • Saturday afternoon telesessions
  • 24 hour access to our private message boards

This way, no matter what difficulty you may find yourself in that day or whatever immediate advice you need you will have guidance and support.  As much as you can learn from the instructor (see photo above) we are fostering an environment in which the group members can learn from each other as well.  Nobody but other voiceover people are going to be able to help you in this business.

At the risk of sounding salesy, the classes really are filling up and we will have to start putting people on the waiting list soon.

The best part is that since I am already independently wealthy I am offering membership for just $100 per month.  That is 4 or 5 hours of seminar time per month and 24 hour support on the boards for a few bucks a day.  What more could you possibly do to better your career for this, or any price?

“Go The [email protected] To Sleep” Audiobook Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson

The “children’s” book Go The [email protected] To Sleep has to be one of the most honest pieces of literature ever penned.  Anyone with kids will tell you that is all you are thinking in the back of your head when you are trying to get the little monsters down for the night anyway.  It is absolutely hysterical and makes a great gift for anyone with newly spawned larvae infesting their home and interfering with their love lives.

Now, in possibly the most inspired voiceover casting ever, the audiobook version has been voiced by Jules Winnfield himself.  Best of all it is available as a free download from Audible.  How very, very cool.

Please understand that this contains some incredibly NSFW language so Mormons may want to pass but you cool kids will hopefully find it as fantastic as I did.

You’re welcome.

And We’re Back…

Sorry for the downtime on the blog here and the asinine theme right now. Stupid GoDaddy. We’ll have things real purty shortly.

Hey VO Talent: Do This Quick Thing To Help Or You Are Officially A Big Jerk

Mary McKitrickMy apologies for being late to the party but the other guys were nice enough to get the ball rolling.  Here’s the story: talent and all around incredibly sweet girl Mary McKitrick “wins” a local Emmy award (the category was “audio”) for some documentary work she did.  Check out the awesome picture over there of her with the hardware.  So, I gave her a ring to congratulate her and ask on which of her many fireplace mantels she is going to put hers.  It turns out that she doesn’t get to keep one.  Even though the award was for “audio” apparently only the guys who worked on her audio get to keep one because there is no official category for the voiceover talent….

Now, we aren’t blaming NATAS for the slight as the category just does not currently exist but she is getting royally shafted either way.  Seriously, I call B.S..

Even if you don’t give a flying fig1 about Mary or if she gets a statue, if you are a voiceover talent you should be getting a little sick and tired about the lack of recognition and respect that we get come award time and feel that we should be able to polish up some phoney-baloney swag ourselves (outside of the usual megastars who get recognized for prime time work).

So circle the wagons people and stand up for yourselves!  It’s easy.  My lovers Dave Courvoisier and Peter O’Connell have helped set up a Facebook page, all you have to do is go there and “like” it.  As of now there is a paltry amount of likes.  Once we get a respectable number we will bring this to the attention of the powers-that-be and hopefully get Mary what she deserves and have the criteria changed for future awards so that they recognize voiceover talent.2

So go HERE and click “like” please.  Then, if you are so inclined3, please share this post and the page with everyone in your social networks and everyone you know in the VO game.  Please, it takes like a second and a half and could really make a difference for all of us.

1. This marks the second time this post I have not actually cursed.  I’m a model of self restraint as of late.
2. That means you, dummy.
3. Be inclined.  Do it.
